Ambitious math instruction for all
Today I am thinking a lot about the MCOE Math Team vision…especially the part where EVERY student is empowered by the opportunities Math affords.
Some students are systematically denied access to meaningful and empowering mathematics. I will continue working to fix this.
We start by using the Math Hierarchy of Needs to think about the things a students needs in order to become a mathematically literate human who is a confident problem poser and problem solver. We call this ambitious instruction.
We have been thinking about the specific teacher moves (routines, procedures, etc) to fulfill the student needs at each level.
Then we strategically introduce these teacher moves over multiple years.
Ambitious instruction is achieved when students regularly experience all the layers.
Then we support that ambitious instruction with…
1️⃣ in-class coaching
2️⃣ thoughtful PLC support to calibrate implementation of the teacher moves
3️⃣ training site leaders to know what teachers are trying to do in the classroom
Improvement science is used to identify roadblocks and then find remedies to those roadblocks.
